How to convert a video in Telegram
Three steps, about two minutes – right inside a Telegram chat.

Convert video to MP4
A MOV off an iPhone, an MKV from a download, an AVI off an old drive – MP4 is the one format every player, messenger and camera roll opens without arguing.
- Resolution – Original, 1080p or 720p. The preset is a ceiling, never an enlargement: a 720p clip stays 720p.
- Sound – on by default. An AAC track is copied across untouched; anything else is re-encoded to AAC.
- HDR – off by default. Off, an HDR recording is tone-mapped to ordinary SDR colour, so it stops looking washed out on a normal screen. On, the bot keeps HEVC 10-bit with its HDR metadata – gorgeous on a modern phone, still refused by some Windows players. A clip that was never HDR ignores the switch, and the bot says so.
Already an MP4 with H.264 video? If it also fits the resolution you picked, the bot repackages the file instead of re-encoding it: the picture comes through bit for bit and it takes seconds instead of minutes. This is conversion, not compression, so you get the file even when it ends up a touch larger. The result arrives as a document, so Telegram can't re-compress it on the way to you.
Convert video to GIF
A looping GIF for a bug report, a chat reaction, a README or a forum post – with a colour palette computed for your particular clip, which holds gradients together far better than a generic 256-colour table.
- Length – the first 5, 10 or 15 seconds. Or type a segment like 0:12–0:20 and take any piece up to 30 seconds; a typed segment is remembered until you tap a preset again.
- Size – 320, 480 or 640 px on the long side, so a portrait clip stays portrait. Nothing is ever enlarged.
- Frame rate – 10, 15 or 24 fps. Lower is lighter; 24 is for motion that has to stay smooth.
You get a real .gif, delivered as a file rather than an animation. That part is deliberate: sent as an animation, Telegram quietly repackages a GIF into an MP4, and what you save is no longer a GIF at all.
Convert video to WebM
The format the web wants. A WebM background loads faster than the same seconds of MP4 and plays inline in every modern browser – and it is one of the few video formats that can carry transparency.
- Resolution – 720p or 1080p, again as a ceiling. The full duration is kept: WebM trims nothing.
- Target size – Auto, 2, 4 or 10 MB, or any number of megabytes you type. Handy when the page budget says "hero video under 4 MB".
- Sound – off by default. A background video is muted anyway, and dropping the track is most of the saving. A Keep transparency checkbox under the mode description is on from the start.
If the clip already fits your target, or can't reach it without falling apart, the bot says so, names the smallest size that would work, and charges nothing.
Converting is not compressing
Two menus, two jobs. Compress keeps your format and only makes the file smaller. Convert changes the format – and treats your file differently along the way.
The format is the point
Convert changes the container and the codec – MOV to MP4, a clip to GIF, anything to WebM. Compress always hands back an MP4, only lighter.
Your metadata survives
MP4 and WebM keep the capture date, geolocation, rotation and the camera make and model. Compression strips all of it – a smaller file is the whole point there. GIF keeps none: the format has nowhere to put it.
The file always arrives
A conversion is delivered even if the result grew a little – you asked for the format, not for fewer megabytes. Compression that can't shrink a file tells you so and charges nothing.
